Maritime surveillance

HAL-Dornier 228 Coast Guard version covers a wide mission spectrum viz. surveillance of EEl, pollution control, SAR, aerial survey and CASEV AC.

STOL performance, high cruising speed and long flight endurance are made possible by the combination of advanced aerodynamics, low fuel consumption and increased fuel tank size.

Comfortable and low workload cockpit with state-of-the-art avionics enable the crew to carry out their task without fatigue.

Mission equipment

Surveillance radar: HAL-Dornier 228 is fitted with an efficient high resolution 360° maritime Super Marecradar with a scanning range of 475 km. Super Marec is a latest generation radar with colour digital display, selectable video levels, automatic computation and data presentation of any target/track on demand.

This system can simultaneously track 32 targets and present information on anyone on demand. It is capable of detecting a fishing boat at 35 nm and a tank at 125 nm (sea state between 3 and 4) when flying at a height of 10,000 feet.

Pollution control pods:

Two pods, each capable of carrying upto 1891 litres of chemicals, can be mounted under the wings. The system, which is monitored and controlled by the main console, is currently in use by Indian Coast Guard for spraying of oil binding agents to remove oil pollutants from coastal waters and prevent contamination.

7.62 mm guns

Each wing may be mounted with a pod carrying two guns, each with a capacity of 300 rounds of standard NATO 7.62 mm belted ammunition. Guns may be fired individually or simultaneously with the aid of an optical gun sight in the cockpit.

IR/UV line scanner

Swedish Space Corporation's line scanner is provided to cater to:

  • Air borne detection, identification, classification and documentation of oil pollutions/spreading on coastal and main shipping routes
  • Detection of castaways and SAR guidance
  • Detection, identification and pursuit of smuggling boats and other intruders entering economic surveillance zone.

Camera system and bubble windows

The hand held type Agiflite camera for aerial photography is interfaced with ONS for recording instant navigational data.

Two bubble windows one each on LH and RH side of cabin are provided for observation / photography from laterally sliding seat.

Photographs may also be taken through cockpit windshield and flight operable roller door.
